About the Training Tests

The purpose of the training tests is to help students, teachers, and parents become familiar with the various item types, tools, and navigation used in the online testing system; the tests are not intended to guide classroom instruction. Training tests are available for the English language arts/literacy (ELA), math, science, and ELPA21 online tests. Some students may have difficulty with the content aligned to higher grades within the grade level/subject range of each training test; but this should not interfere with the students’ ability to interact with an item for training purposes. If an item appears to be too difficult, encourage students to experiment with the tools, choose the best answer, and move on to the next item. Student responses to the training test are not saved or scored. Users can access the Science Training Test Support document, which includes helpful information for teachers and an answer key for each of the WCAS training tests.

About the Practice Tests

The purpose of the practice tests in both English language arts/literacy (ELA) and math is to allow teachers, students, and parents to experience a Smarter Balanced test. The practice tests mirror the year-end assessment: they are similar in format and structure to the actual Smarter Balanced ELA and math assessments, illustrate the range of grade-specific test questions, and include performance tasks. However, the practice tests are not adaptive and student responses are not saved or scored.

Although the practice tests are not intended to guide classroom instruction, Smarter Balanced recognizes that teachers, students, and parents may want to know the correct answers to the questions as they work through the practice tests. Therefore, Smarter Balanced has produced scoring guides for these practice tests. Users can access the Practice Test Scoring Guides webpage, select the + next to the appropriate grade level, and then select the specific scoring guide.
