  • March 21, 2016 – Known iOS Issues with ELPA21 and Smarter Balanced Assessment Secure Browser

Apple iOS versions 7-9 have exhibited several problems when delivering assessments, with implications for the ELPA21 and the Smarter Balanced ELA assessments.

First, a flaw in the operating system disables all audio after a video plays.  The ELPA21 tests include video along with listening items.  Therefore, we recommend that students avoid taking the ELPA21 assessment on iOS devices.  If it cannot be avoided, students will have to log out, then log back in, following video segments if subsequent audio does not play.

Second, a similar problem occurs when a student listens to text-to-speech on the iPad.  Subsequent audio in listening stimuli is disabled.  Again, the problem resolves when the student logs out and logs back in.  In this case, AIR will release a new secure browser in approximately two weeks that resolves this issue.  For students who receive the text-to-speech accommodation on Smarter Balanced ELA assessments, we recommend that they use a device other than an iPad, or postpone testing until the new browser version is available.
